How bets count

If you’re on the Free plan, you get up to 100 bets per calendar month. Here’s exactly what counts and what doesn’t, so the maths is never surprising.

What counts as a bet

A bet counts toward your monthly allowance when:

  • You tap a price on a ladder (or place via the confirm dialog), AND
  • The order matches on the exchange — fully or partially.

If your order goes onto the book without matching (a limit order at a price no one’s hitting), it doesn’t count until liquidity meets it. Once it matches — even just partially — it counts as one bet.

What doesn’t count

  • Cancellations. Cancelling an unmatched bet from the orders page or the ladder doesn’t use anything — cancel as much as you like.
  • Cashouts that go to the book and don’t fill. During a fill-or-kill cashout, only the legs that actually match increment your count. Killed legs are free.
  • Order edits. Editing the size or price of an unmatched bet is a cancel-then-place at the bank — the new placement only counts if it matches.

Cashout: a bit more detail

When you tap Cash out on a runner with multiple matched orders, B&L submits all the closing legs in one batch as fill-or-kill. Each leg that fills counts as one bet against your allowance. So a cashout that closes positions on 3 runners and all 3 fill counts as 3 bets. If only 2 fill (the third runner’s liquidity moves before your batch lands), only 2 count.

This means a typical session-end cashout uses 1–3 bets from your allowance. Plan accordingly.

When does the counter reset?

The counter resets on the 1st of each month at midnight UTC — see When does my allowance reset for the exact mechanics if you’re trading near a month boundary.

Seeing your current count

Your bets-used count is visible in two places:

  • Cog menu (top-right of the app) — the badge under “Free” reads e.g. “42 of 100 bets this month”.
  • Plan page — the same number, with the bonus context of when the allowance resets.

Both update live as you place bets.

Hit the limit?

If you place a bet that would take you past the limit, the placement is rejected and you’ll see a clear “Monthly bet limit reached” prompt. You have three options:

  1. Switch to Trader. Free during the launch period, then £9/month or £72/year — see Switching between plans.
  2. Cancel an unmatched bet. Cancellations don’t help your count today, but if you have unmatched orders sitting on the book you might want to clear them anyway.
  3. Wait for the new month. Your count resets at midnight UTC on the 1st.
